Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures performed today and is designed to both enhance and increase breast size and appearance. Implants filled with either saline or silicone gel may be used. Dr. Branch will discuss your options with you in order to determine which type of implant is right for you.
Procedure
Enhances the size of breasts using implants filled with silicone gel or saline.
Length
1 to 2 hours.
Anesthesia
Local with sedation or general.
In/Outpatient
Usually outpatient.
Side Effects
The most common side effects of this procedure include: swelling, increased sensitivity to stimulation, temporarily increased risk of bruising, and temporary soreness.
Risks
As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks associated with breast augmentation. These risks may include:
- Lack Of Implant Permanence: In this case, replacement or surgical removal of the implants is sometimes necessary to correct the problem. Signs that an implant may need to be removed or replaced are scar tissue formation around the area of the implant, causing the breast to feel hard or tight, and deflation of the implant.
- Bleeding or infection
- Noticeable increase or decrease in nipple and breast sensitivity, which may be permanent. (Note: Some women have reported symptoms similar to those of immune disorders. Ask your doctor about these and other FDA concerns.)
Recovery
Back to work: a few days
Physical contact with breasts: 3 to 4 weeks
Fading of scars: several months to a year or more
