Excessive Sweating (hyperhidrosis)

If you experience excessive, non -psychological sweating, you are not alone. You may be suffering from Hyperhidrosis, a condition that is defined as an excessive and non-physiological amount of sweat produced by the body.

Facts on Hyperhidrosis

  • It affects between 1 and 2% of the population
  • Family genetic history is believed to play a role in Hyperhidrosis
  • The most common areas are the hands, feet and the armpits
  • Hyperhidrosis can negatively affect people both socially and functionally in their daily lives
  • For those who suffer from excessive sweating there are now outpatient surgical procedures available

Treatments

Bangor Plastic & Hand Surgery is pleased to offer is pleased to offer the following alternatives:

Approved by the FDA, a dilute concentration of BOTOX® can be injected into the axillae to decrease armpit sweating. This procedure temporarily blocks the signals from the nerves that activate the sweat glands. This treatment may last 4 - 6 months. Retreatment is necessary.

Another solution that is much longer term would be surgery. A minor outpatient surgical procedure can be performed right here at our office, under local anesthesia, to remove the sweat glands by curettage (scraping) and/or liposuction. Little downtime or scarring is involved. The result is significant, and in most cases, permanent reduction of sweating

If you are currently suffering from Hyperhidrosis, and are searching for a surgeon in the Bangor, Augusta, or Waterville area, please call our office to schedule a consultation. Dr. Branch can help you decide what option(s) are best for you.
